Gotham University Campus, Monday afternoon
"Lance?"

"Here."

A couple heads swiveled around, and Dinah grinned back at them, then stretched. Some of the female faces brightened. Most of the male faces just looked confused. Well, most.

"I'm sorry?" Her stats professor asked, looking askance. "Where is Miss Lance?"

"Dinah's got the flu. I'm her cousin David. She asked me to sit in and get her assignments. That cool with you, ma'am?"

She blinked, then shrugged. "I suppose. Please have her e-mail me next time first, though... Lefkowitz?"

"Here..."

Dinah restrained the urge to giggle, and very soberly paid attention during the rest of class. Well. For someone repressing internal snickers. At the end of class, Kyle came over, looking very worried. "Is she going to be okay? Uh. I'm Kyle. Hi. Why didn't she phone me?"

Awwwwwww. "She can't talk, dude. Her voice is shot. She wrote me some notes about you, you've been tutoring her, right?"

Kyle ducked his head and blushed. "Um. Yeah. I mean. I've been trying, she really doesn't need it, she just gets frustrated, she's smart. You know? Well. Sure you know. You're her cousin." Then, very almost-nonchalantly to the point of not being so at all, he asked in a rush, "So, you think she's over her ex yet?"

...Um? Oh, Kyle.

"Let's walk and talk, Kyle." Dinah paused as two of her other friends came up to ask about her. "I think it's past time."

[ooc: establishy, but open for texts and phone calls!]

Dinah had to put the phone down for a minute to be able to smother the chortles a that, and then came back on with, "Well, now you can tell him he'd look like Emma if he ever got turned into a girl. And possibly imply you know how to do it."

"At best I could manage an illusion that would make him look and feel like a female," Karla mused, distracted for a moment from THE COMPLETE HORROR THAT WAS HER FUTURE. "A tangled web or something. Of course, I don't intend to have him meet Emma any time soon. He needs to learn how to behave in public before I inflict him on any of you."

Otherwise he'd run back to his room, probably in tears.

Distracted was good! "That makes it sound like you still need to housebreak him. Possibly whap him on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper. How big a jerk are we talking?"

"Gah, I don't even know," Karla sighed. "Morton trusts him, so that's a lot of points in his favor, you know? But he's got your typical Warlord Prince arrogance in spades. I don't think he liked that I outranked him in both rank and caste."

Smug Karla was smug.

Dinah snorted. "Well, you're the Queen anyway, you were going to outrank him even if you weren't a Healer and a Black Widow too. Goofus boy. He sounds spoilt, if he's used to being the strongest magic-user in the room." She grinned evilly. "You should introduce him to Merlin sometime. No arrogance at all, and can probably turn this Julian into a bunny rabbit on accident."

"He could use some time as a bunny," Karla said. "Warlord Princes are rare and he'll probably come out with a Green or even a Sapphire after his Offering, which will make him the ranking male in Glacia. Even a lot of Queens can't match his Jewel rank. Knowing I already do? Probably just a little galling."

"That hierarchy thing you guys have going makes you all waaaay too competitive," Dinah said, contemplating that. "Having that be the first two things anyone knows about you. It'd be like if I wore a sign that said 'touch telepath, telekinetic, and oh by the way if I scream loud enough you might die' around my neck back home."

"It's not really a competition," Karla said. "At least, for those of us with brains it isn't."

Easy words for a Sapphire-Jeweled witch, not that Karla realized it.

"It's more like a dance, because rank is so fluid. Caste and Jewel rank, of course, and social rank as well. I mean, think about it, Beale technically outranks me because he wears the Red. Cassidy and I are both Queens, but I outrank her Jewel and she's not an aristo, though that social rank really only matters when that's all someone has." She sniffed, dismissing the who aristo class with a wave. "Morton outranks Cassidy's Jewel, but not by caste. Same with Julian, but since he's a Warlord Prince, it's a lot closer. See? A dance."

A very intricate one with steps that were very hard to learn.

"But it's all based on magic, and who could take who in a showdown, or has some rare and useful trait," Dinah pointed out. "Although it does sound more complicated than your Julian would be happy to admit... My world does that too, I guess. For people who really care about money, or status. No, power. It's about power."

Dinah was feeling her way into something she didn't quite have words for here. But that last idea felt right, for Gotham and for Kaeleer.
