Room 312, Thursday late afternoon
After her spar with Tahiri, Dinah wound up with enough bruises and aches to need a break, and watching the episode of Darkest Night that she'd missed last night seemed like a good idea. Lying on her bed, she cued up the website on her laptop, and promptly started laughing four minutes into the ep.

"Oh, c'mon! He's just a big puppy!"

The door is open, and Dinah is giggly.

[and so is the post!]

"I sort of called him and left a message saying I'd love to go out with him? Which doesn't sound very accidenty, but it was that day when everybody's voicemail was all messed up."

"Oh nooooo! But that was really brave of you... did you ever find out who got it? I mean did anyone ever say, 'so, are we on for Saturday'?"

"Sort of? Except it was Merlin." Francine cast a furtive glance at the door like there might be squirrels with digital records. Or big ears. "The message wasn't for him. Never, never tell him? Please?"

Dinah's mouth dropped into an 'O', and she blinked stupidly at Francine for a second before nodding, then shaking her head in confusion. "I promise, no, I won't tell! He doesn't have to know that." She reached for another cookie, and asked, "Do I want to know who you meant to ask out?"

"Well, I thought I was returning a call, not really asking somebody out, you know?" Ahh, the truth, best stalling technique ever. "'Cause I got a message that wasn't for me too."

"Oh, sure. Who from?" Dinah asked, then said, "I got one from Arthur, freaking out about the answering machine that day. In retrospect, hilarious. At the time, I called back and read him the riot act. I wonder who got that one?"

Francine licked very, very interesting crumbs off her fingers. "Um. Priestly. Mine, I mean. I don't know who you yelled at."

Dinah's eyebrows went up as she said, "Ohhhh. I'm really good friends with him... I can see why you'd say yes, he's cool." She bit her lip, then agreed with a quick shake of her head, "Yeahhhh, Merlin never needs to know that though."

"See, my instincts suck a lot too," Francine pointed out. "Or at least my timing or my luck or something. But it didn't turn out bad. I like Merlin. And I'd totally have said yes if he'd called too."

Dinah kinda did find that heartening, that she wasn't the only one with no radar for guys. If Francine could do it, she could do it to. Eventually. Maybe. "And you were here a semester before me... did you date anyone here before Merlin?"

Francine shook her head. "Nope. Well, I went to Homecoming with Jess, but that was a fix-up thing. Like, we signed up to find dates." Well, she had. And she thought he had, so that counted as we.

"Ohh. Okay. Yeah, I feel better." Dinah sighed and straightened. "Ronan said if I ever wanted to... you know? But. He says that to nearly everyone. And it would be weird, 'cause Tony's dated him." She took another cookie, then got off the bed to pull milk out of the mini-fridge. "After he's graduated that won't even be a back-up option."

Francine frowned. Not judgmentally or anything; she was just trying to imagine herself doing that. "I don't think I could...you know. With a guy just as a back-up option. I think it's supposed to be special, you know?"

"Okay, good, not just me. And Priestly." Dinah grabbed two mugs, and poured milk into them for each of them. "So, yeah. I only think that when I wonder if it'll be never on a boyfriend instead of just, you know. Someday." She offered the mug to Francine. "Reassuring myself that it's not hopeless."

"It's never hopeless," Francine said, taking the mug gratefully. Except, you know, when she was depressed about men. Then it was the end of the wooooooorld. "I think there's somebody we were all meant to be with."

And his name is Chuck Bass. It'll take him a while to get through everyone, but he'll make it.
